Ambassador Troy Fitrell assists clients as they evaluate and access growing opportunities in Africa. He enjoys strong relationships with senior-level African leadership across the continent and expertise on how to effectively work with second Trump Administration trade and investment facilitation agencies within the context of U.S. policy objectives, opportunities and concerns.
Amb. Fitrell directed the State Department’s Africa Bureau from the start of the second Trump Administration until his departure in July 2025. In that position, he helped to shape American energy, critical minerals, and broader commercial engagement with African nations. He has also served as ambassador to the Republic of Guinea and in previous positions as Director of the State Department’s Offices of West African Affairs and Southern African Affairs, as Chargé d’Affaires and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. embassies in Ethiopia and Mauritius, as Deputy Director of the Office of International Security Cooperation in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs and at American embassies in Europe, Africa and Central America. He was selected as a Pearson Fellow on the staff of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Amb. Fitrell earned a B.A. at the University of Maryland and an M.S. at the National War College. He is the recipient of a Presidential Rank Award, the Cobb Award for Initiative and Success in Trade Development, the Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Labor Affairs, and numerous superior and meritorious awards. He is a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Guinea. He speaks French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Swedish.
